40 hectares of stone corals 'breaded' with mine tailings laced with cyanide and mercury, only in Paracale, Camarines Norte, Philippines with Save Pulang Daga Movement founder Mr. Rio Paliza.

Paracale, Camarines Norte – In full support to stop the entire destruction in our environment continuous action from the movement of saving Pulang Daga (Daga is soil in Bicol) takes place as concerned citizens guaranteed a stand to clean up the coastal as a move of rehabilitating, caring and saving not only the Pulang Daga beach resort but as well as their great concern to environment.

The Coastal Clean-up drive campaign from Save Pulang Daga Movement cleans the coastal area in Paracale as the movement’s contribution in the celebration of the Environment month and on April 22, the Earth Day. It was indeed a success with a greater numbers who came to join and participates and does hand-in-hand, from the young to the senior citizens of Paracale, doing their stand and share by cleaning up the Pulang Daga environment. The Save Pulang Daga Movement Coastal Cleanup drive shows the real spirit of Bayanihan and proves that Filipinos are really something when in harmony standing for a great cause.

After the clean-up drive, groups of concerned citizens to save Pulang Daga, march on the mining site to observe and inspect what is really goin’ up there with the destruction. Closer we all find out that Pulang Daga looks like an abandoned rape wounded prey with its offender nowhere to find. The concerned citizens hike up together with the “mangingilaw” (fishermen at night), we condole, expresses our deepest sympathy to environment, with Pulang Daga’s experiencing her grief, loss of her coral environment covered with mud soils and harmfully damaged, continue suffering pain, with some part of the sea water contaminated and covered with “putik” (mud soils).

Pulang Daga Environment with its rich in coral environment and mangrove reforestration, now in abrupt destruction, covering hectares of contaminated mine tailings from irresponsible mining in Paracale, Camarines Norte.

Common minerals and elements found in tailings includes:
Arsenic – Found in association with gold ores
Barite
Calcite
Fluorite
Radioactive materials – Naturally present in many ores
Mercury
Sulfur – Forms many sulfide compounds / pyrites
Cadmium
Hydrocarbons – Introduced by mining and processing equipment (oils & greases)

Common additives found in tailings:
Cyanide – as both sodium cyanide (NaCN) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Leaching agent in extremely dilute quantities which readily volatize upon exposure to sunlight.
SEX – Sodium Ethyl Xanthate. Flotation agent.
PAX – Potassium Amyl Xanthate. Flotation agent.
MIBC – Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol. Frothing agent.
Sulfamic acid – Cleaning / descaling agent.
Sulfuric acid – Used in large quantities in the PAL process (Pressure Acid Leaching).
Activated Carbon – Used in CIP (Carbon In Pulp) and CIL (Carbon In Leach) processes.
Calcium – Different compounds, introduced as lime to aid in pH control.

Paracale, Camarines Norte – From a well celebrated fiesta of this golden town of Paracale, actually the Parroquia Nuestra Senora de Candelaria's 400 years of age, we came to entangled with the town's former parish priest Rev. Father Joselito Chavez's remarkable story about the town church's miraculous patron saint.  Though I'm not a religious kind of man, I do believe in miracles or such a term "Divine Intervention", whatever term you might call or perhaps hail on it.

It's really an honor and a great privilege to know a story behind the Nuestra Senora De Candelaria, or to the Paracale old folks commonly hailed their miraculous patron as simply as their “Inay Candi”. Indeed, a surprising legendary Blessed Virgin Mother and a Noble Queen of Heavens who lost her finger in a battle to save her beloved Paracale people during the town’s time of adversity and naval wars.

From the old-antiquated pages of the historical accounts from the Paracale Roman Catholic Convent, it was traced that on the morning of Aug 29, 1809, an invasion of 37 fully loaded Moro Vintas attempted to invade the town of Paracale. It turned out later that the church goers had been frightened by the outcries of men, women and children scuttling in diverse directions after sighting the approaching Vintas.

This merciful Blessed Virgin come down from her tabernacle, right then and then, waived and wielded her sword to warn the prowlers to run off. Amused by the sight of the little woman on the beach, the invaders came nearer only to find that the woman really meant her descending, wading through the foamy waters, she struck here and thrust with such lighting speed and wonderful accuracy that her foes found no time to defend at the same time a handful enemies were swallowed in one huge gulp by the waters of the sea. Pulang-Daga Beach Resort, Paracale, Camarines Norte

Pulang-Daga, Paracale – What will happen in Paracale? A wondering question, or such a blistering nightmare not only for us a nature loving humane but to the young generations in the gold town of Paracale? Every vacation, be it summer, or end of school days, we relieve tension and stress by allowing ourselves, and, of course our youngs to take time and visit nature, for we still believe that the beauty and wonder of it still amazes and heals our very own souls and give such inspiration by just staring to its God-given magnificence.

Pulang-Daga Mountainous Terrain, now and then

With an invitation from Mr. Rio Paliza of Paliza del Rio Tourist Inn, who hails from Paracale, Camarines Norte, though, it was such a great honor and a gratitude for such a great gesture from a fellow photojournalist, we travel all the way from Manila to Camarines Norte and, what to a behold, what's happening in Paracale? Then, shivering question comes, are these the cause of what we just abnormally experienced, our senses were shocked? Seeing is to believing, as we try to convince ourselves with our very own naked eyes, we come to Paracale to embrace its wonders and beauty according to Mr. Paliza, but what a mammothed surprise, we come to answer and retaliate to what Mr. Paliza told me about its beauty as we gaze our eyes towards Pulang-Daga surroundings, and just saw the mountainous terrain in such a despair that glooms our very own soul and rattled the shock in us.

What ever happen to the nature? Can we still find joys to what we just saw and bewildered, that until now, haunted me like a howling wilds in the lost space? Then an inquiry came to find my silence, what are the people of Paracale tries to attest or show to the young generation who wishes to embrace and witness the beauty of thy nature, or, are there any local concerns that will arise to save this such disgusting disgrace to nature and to its wonderful town, and its beautiful beach, that was Pulang-Daga. Are we going to blame these to the people or to the generated mining that really affects our environment and its resources? Where and when are we going to stand about these?

Another thing that really shake the head out of me, was another disgusting signs, how come a near public road for the people's easy and century old public road going to Pulang-Daga Beach Resort are now in a private property and the people of Paracale are advise to take some authoritative command, and must follow and abide with their own given rules. So, a great inquest set forth, whatever happen to the town, or, shall i rephrase my question, what will happen to Paracale, and according to Mr. Paliza, the beauty and wonder of Pulang-Daga, and whose responsible for these abrupt changes, we are now going to follow and abide?

Again, we would like to thank Mr. Paliza who provided us these concerns that came to our immense attention, also some concerning TPK Paracalenos, and some photo clips we used for the article concern. Nonetheless, as the antiquated story goes on and over and over, everything is not yet too late, if we are all going to take our own hands and might, we can save the nature as well as Pulang-Daga.
